Wine and Friends
from the book Portraits of Grace
by James Stephen Behrens, OCSO
Relationships with God abound with stories of feasts, friendships and intimacies of abiding human love. Many of the images Jesus used to describe the Kingdom were feasts. The “end time” is to be a time of joy. The breaking of the eternal into the finite will come as a celebratory feast. Some may ask why this can’t happen right away. Some may wonder why, if God wants friendship, we aren’t brought immediately into his fold.
Friendship takes time. Jesus enjoyed the company of men and women and he especially enjoyed sharing meals. He learned of friendship through sharing food and wine with all kinds of people.
There is something sacramental to every meal we share. A meal should be a sign of friendship, a symbolic ritual. God is present in the breaking of bread, the sharing of wine, the telling of stories. Our stories are those of God as well. As we grow and learn trust, fidelity, warmth and comfort through friends gathered around a table, we are learning how God takes our time and makes it sacred. It is a sign of a life yet to come, a life we already share.
