The more things change, the more they stay the same!

When I was in High School in the 70’s, my best friend’s mother loved to gift us with her words of wisdom. One of her famous sayings was – “the more things change, the more they stay the same!” That saying rings true for me today as I reflect on the last three decades in catechetical ministry. (more…)

Ministry Meets Technology

We see it everywhere. All kinds of people in all kinds of places walk around with internet-accessible devices in hand. We take our technology with us wherever we go and we can be connected with the world at the touch of a single button.

No one could probably have predicted how quickly this trend would develop or how dependent we would become on instant access. In a matter of mere seconds, we can locate our exact position on the face of the earth, find a restaurant within a two mile circle and learn the migratory route of Canadian geese heading south for winter. Take a moment and reflect on the variety of ways you use technology that flood your own world. It’s enough to take your breath away.

The Challenge

Beginning with the Year of Faith, the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas (AKCK) began new initiatives to invigorate parishes and enliven parishioners. To enable its priests, parish staff, and parishioners to more fully understand Catholic beliefs and the richness of the gift of faith, the Archdiocese saw the need to overcome the “crisis of content” by establishing a repository of Catholic digital media that would be easily accessible throughout the archdiocese. This repository needed to suit Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann’s mandate to present content that was faithful to the Church’s magisterium and was supportive of the priorities and catechetical needs of the local church.

The Solution

dmcMyCatholicVoice teamed with AKCK to build the most complete, cross publisher repository of Catholic digital media available in the Church today. This repository required review of over 40 Catholic publishers and 25,000 digitized media items to select those important to the archdiocese. MyCatholicVoice developed the “AKCK Digital Media Center” as a customizable platform for adding content as well as streaming and/or download of free and for-fee digital media.

Working closely with AKCK, MyCatholicVoice is providing:

  • An archdiocese-branded “store front” and content delivery network for digital media distribution, complete with merchant processing, publisher settlements for download (iTunes model), and streaming (Netflix model)
  • A Resource Librarian for management and oversight of the online media library
  • Continued publisher relations for Digital Distribution Agreement management
  • Post-production support for editing and collaboration around locally prepared video content
  • Graphic design, indexing, and tagging to keep the Resource Center updated according to the liturgical year and archdiocesan events and priorities
  • A specialized team to support the complex requirement for digital media delivery
  • Live streaming and download replays for archdiocesan events
  • An enhanced library loan function for legacy DVD distribution within archdiocesan ZIP codes
  • Ongoing consulting services
  • Cloud services for storage

The Results

With AKCK Digital Media Center, the Archbishop’s duty to teach is enhanced by the power and accessibility of new media for those who desire to an authentic search for definitive truth in their life.  In addition, the Archdiocese frequently makes accessible live stream events that have thousands of downloads after the events for individual replay.  For the first time, teaching and faith formation is not limited to time and place, or the availability of physical media items like DVDs.

“The AKCK Digital Media Center has shown how we can extend, open, touch, heal, and excite more hearts so more may be shaped by grace. We know this journey is just beginning, and we are excited to see the Gospel touching more hearts and access to solid Catholic content being enabled in new ways.”

The Challenge

The National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC), the largest single gathering of Catholic young people in the United States, faced several challenges as it reflected on how to best execute the mission of the National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM) for the future.

Two key questions emerged:

  • How can NCYC effectively engage parents in the experience of joy, hope and enthusiasm of the conference?
  • How can NCYC enable youth to prepare for, deepen and sustain the NCYC experience?

The Solution

MyCatholicVoice teamed with the NFCYM to conduct the first ever “Virtual Pilgrimage,” an online experience with tandem tracks for youth and adults to “Prepare, Deepen and Sustain” the event weekend.  Executing this indepth program, MyCatholicVoice conducted a number of “firsts” for the conference:

  • Recruiting and training Youth Reporters who chronicled their NCYC attendance to provide a multimedia online experience for parents and youth who were unable to attend NCYC in person.
  • Creating an online Pilgrim Guide to outline “What is a Virtual Pilgrimage?” and “How Do I Make a Virtual Pilgrimage?”
  • For each step in the Pilgrim ‘s journey, MyCatholicVoice teamed with youth ministers to provide direction to pilgrims on:
    • How to Prepare
    • Guidance & Direction
    • Baggage
    • Rest/Prayer/Reflection
    • Destination
    • Returning Home

MyCatholicVoice provided all media services for the NCYC online experience including:

  • Live video streaming with moderated chat for General Sessions, key workshops, and liturgies
  • Post-production for conference videos prior to the end of each day for online participants on-demand viewing and future download
  • Packaging and streaming of NCYC music downloads from the conference
  • Developing, creating, posting and downloading resources for each step of the Virtual Pilgrims’ journey.

The Results

  • 43,276 visitors from 88 countries participated in this first-ever virtual experience of NCYC.
  • For the first time, parents were able to witness the work of the Holy Spirit in their children’s lives via the live stream of conference General Sessions, concerts, and liturgies.
  • All General Sessions and workshops were made available by the completion of the conference, with tens of thousands of additional downloads.
  • NCYC leadership gained understanding within their ministry of a new tipping point for connecting with today’s youth.

“MyCatholicVoice challenged us to create innovative and relevant ways to communicate with the youth ministry community. By providing the most innovative virtual tools, we have greatly extended the reach of our conferences.”

Focus: Spiritual Resiliency: “AMS Catholic Faith Deployed”

The Challenge

The challenge for Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D. is unprecedented.  How do you provide for the spiritual care, connect with, and create community for 1.8 million Catholics, serving globally, in an archdiocese on which the sun never sets?  Add in a few other challenges, like being deployed to combat zones, serving underway on ships, dealing with restricted or unavailable Internet access, and supporting Catholic chaplains tasked to minister to other faiths in interfaith environments while maintaining their Catholic identity.  And to round it out, develop these resources for a home mission diocese without parishes and the typical Sunday collections that territorial dioceses rely upon.

The Solution

AMS Catholic Faith DeployedMyCatholicVoice teamed with the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA to utilize what is nearly ubiquitous and already in the hands of nearly every soldier – their Smartphone.  Collecting generous donations of the best Catholic content for personal inspiration for those in military settings from MyCatholicVoice publisher partners, MyCatholicVoice created “AMS Catholic Faith Deployed”, a multi-platform app with fresh monthly updates of content downloaded when Internet access is available. This is no simple app. A number of unique and distinct features respond to these spiritual challenges:

  • An integrated content management system allows publishing – and downloading of free updates of video, audio, and other content without the requirement of going through app store approvals.
  • A patent pending “inspiration server” provides images and quotes according to the liturgical and secular calendar – bringing sources of beauty, art, and image and word for personal reflections to hearts in the desert.
  • A “live stream portal” the AMS uses to bridge nomadic lifestyles to a community of care, providing:
    • Live Entertainment Events (John Angotti Advent and Christmas Concert, for example)
    • Catechetical Training Seminars
    • Live Streamed Masses
    • World Youth Day, National Catholic Youth Conferences, and other global and national events
  • Monthly updates of Bible Studies, Catholic Heroes, 3 Minute Video Retreats, Daily Prayer, Catholic Humor, and personal meditations aids
  • Integrated web services to the AMS Digital Media Center for access and personal download, viewing and saving of a rich repository of faith formation resources – for families, youth, children and young adults
  • Embedded repository of Catholic Prayers, Military Prayers and Saints and other particular resources to support military spiritual care

The Results

Never before has the generosity of Catholic publishers been tapped to make their content freely available to so many in need.  The profound spiritual care requirements of those charged with the “ministry of peace and security” are beginning to be met with urgent and essential sacred aids that seemingly disappear in deployed locations.  Catholic chaplains, once without resources, now have wider access to the wealth of content available to others.

“We began this challenge with a request to provide prayers and a desire to digitally connect this global archdiocese.  MyCatholicVoice listened to our needs and then stretched our thinking with digital capabilities beyond our imagination.  Together we are implementing the new evangelization in ways that transform the user by providing those far from home an engagement with the community of faith that encourages ongoing conversion.  This platform supports the ministry of our Catholic chaplains and actively involves Catholics in the military to develop both their personal and communal discipline for prayer and the sacraments.   The Archdiocese is grateful to the technical expertise of MyCatholicVoice that supports our mission everyday to better serve those who serve.”
